Stalled Bills Appeal Hinges on Arguments Already Rejected by Court of Appeals
LANSING, MI — Today, the Michigan House and Republican Speaker Matt Hall appealed the stalled bills case, which centers on their unconstitutional refusal to transmit pro-worker legislation to Governor Whitmer — legislation that was passed by the Michigan Legislature in 2024.
“The courts and Constitution of Michigan are clear: the Michigan House has an obligation to transmit bills that pass the legislature to the Governor,” said Ron BIEBER, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “This obligation has been affirmed by the bipartisan Court of Appeals and the Court of Claims. By defying the state Constitution, Speaker Hall is making life less affordable for hundreds of thousands of Michigan workers. Their case hinges on arguments already rejected by the Court of Appeals. The Michigan Supreme Court should deny their appeal. No matter what, Michigan’s labor movement stands ready to continue the fight to make sure Governor Whitmer can sign these pro-worker bills into law.”
These pro-worker bills would improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Michigan workers by improving pension security, reforming debt collection, and reinstating the right of public sector workers to bargain over healthcare costs. Every day of delay is another day of higher costs and fewer protections for Michigan workers.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
