LANSING, MI — Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her eighth and final State of the State address this evening, laying out a vision for Michigan in her last year in office. In response, the Michigan AFL-CIO issued the following statement:
“Michigan’s labor movement has made historic achievements under Governor Whitmer’s tenure. We repealed the anti-union ‘right-to-work’ law, restored prevailing wage, and invested in Michiganders pursuing the skilled trades,” said Ron BIEBER, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “These victories have given more Michiganders paths to good-paying, union jobs and decent lives — but there’s more work to be done.”
The Trump administration is making life more unaffordable for Michiganders, and lawmakers need to put workers first, not last.
“Every Michigander should have a fair shot at a decent life. That means funding prevailing wage enforcement, investing more in workforce development, and protecting workers from threats like artificial intelligence. It means making sure everyone in Michigan pays their fair share. Michigan’s labor movement thanks Governor Whitmer for her efforts to support Michigan’s workers. We are committed to working with lawmakers and Governor Whitmer to put workers first,” BIEBER continued.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
