DETROIT, MI – The Michigan AFL-CIO and Michigan Crossroads Council of Scouting America recognize those honored at the 2026 George Meany Awards. The George Meany Award is a national recognition bestowed upon union members who have made a significant contribution to the labor movement and the youth of their communities through volunteering in the programs of Scouting America.
Ryan Charney of IBEW Local 692 is the recipient of this year’s statewide George Meany Award. Charney is a labor leader and advocate, serving as the Business Manager and Financial Secretary of IBEW Local 692, and the Secretary-Treasurer for both the Tri-County Building & Construction Trades Council and the Northern Michigan Building Trades Council. Charney also serves as the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Bay County.
“Service. Trustworthiness. Loyalty. Solidarity. These values flow through the veins of Scouting America and union workers everywhere. So, it’s no surprise that one out of every four scout leaders is a union member,” said CHARNEY.“Scouts make good union members, and union members make good scouts. I am humbled to be in the company of the past recipients of the George Meany Award and look forward to continuing the work of both the labor movement and Scouting America in my community.”
The George Meany Award was established by Scouting America and the AFL-CIO in 1974 and recognizes outstanding union members for their service to their communities’ young people. Individuals are nominated by their Central Labor Council and must exemplify the values of Scouting America by upholding the Scout Oath and Scout Law in their communities, workplaces, and personal lives. Since its inception, only 2,500 union members nationwide have received this prestigious honor.
“Scouting America teaches the values of hard work and service — which are core to the labor movement,” said Janssen LEMLEY, Director of Development for Scouting America, Michigan Crossroads Council. “This year’sawardees live those values and uplift their communities every day. We celebrate their well-deserved recognition.”
Additional awardees include Boyd “Bo” Browning Jr. of UAW 598, Christopher Brutzman of AFGE 3272, Collin Keehn of LiUNA 499, Paul Kusper of UAW 600, Karl Osantowske of Iron Workers Local 25, and Casey Zaucha of Carpenters 1004.
