LANSING, MI — Today, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in the case regarding the bills that Republican Speaker of the Michigan House Matt Hall refuses to transmit to the Governor. The decision of the bipartisan panel, which includes Gov. Engler appointee Judge Murray and Gov. Snyder appointee Judge Cameron, was unanimous in ruling that Speaker Hall is constitutionally required to present to the governor bills that he has unconstitutionally withheld. Michigan’s labor movement released the following statement in response:
“Today’s ruling from the Court of Appeals is a declaration that the rule of law and state Constitution still matter in Michigan,” said Ron BIEBER, president of Michigan AFL-CIO. “Three judges, including two Republican appointees, took Speaker Hall to task, ruling that the stalled, pro-worker bills must be presented to the governor. Each day of delay causes real harm to working Michiganders. It’s time for Speaker Hall to stop wasting taxpayer dollars, end his war on workers and present these bills to Governor Whitmer for her signature.”
The bills under dispute in the case include crucial protections for workers, including healthcare affordability, pension security, and debt collection reforms.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
