LANSING, MI — Today, the Michigan AFL-CIO released the following statement in support of Sens. Stephanie Chang, Mary Cavanagh, and Jeremy Moss’s legislation aimed at protecting Michiganders from ICE. Recent killings of Americans by occupying ICE forces make this legislation both timely and needed.
“The apparent murders of American citizens by federal agents make it clear that we must act to protect our families and communities,” said Ron BIEBER, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “ICE is making us less safe, not more. The labor movement is about dignity, respect and solidarity — for workers and our constitutional rights as Americans. Michigan’s unions urge passage of this critical legislation.”
The legislative package includes bills that would prohibit ICE enforcement in sensitive locations barring an imminent threat to public safety, prohibit government from providing identifying information without a warrant under certain circumstances, and limit when law enforcement can wear masks and disguises while interacting with the public. The Michigan AFL-CIO formally issued a card of support for the aforementioned bills.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
