State Senator Darrin Camilleri puts workers first in latest step to put guardrails on AI
LANSING, MI — Michigan’s labor movement stands in solidarity with State Senator Darrin Camilleri as the RAISE Act was read into the Michigan State Senate yesterday. This follows the RAISE Act’s introduction to the state House by State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou. Lawmakers are listening to what their constituents are saying about AI and stepping up to ensure this new technology works for workers — not against them.
“State Senator Darrin Camilleri’s introduction of the RAISE Act in the Michigan State Senate puts workers first,” said Ron BIEBER, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “We cannot allow unaccountable AI to become a tool for companies to chop down worker wages, benefits and privacy. We applaud Senator Darrin Camilleri and Representative Penelope Tsernoglou — they are leading the charge to put guardrails on AI.”
As companies introduce AI into more workplaces, there is a real risk that this technology will be used to attack worker rights, wages and benefits. The RAISE Act is a critical step in ensuring AI isn’t used to spy on workers or suppress wages.
The RAISE Act takes several important steps to make sure AI is not weaponized against workers. These include:
- Forming guardrails for the use of AI to monitor workers
- Creating standards for employers who choose to use AI
- Prohibiting the use of AI to set wages
“AI is coming whether we like it or not, so we better be prepared,” said State Senator Darrin Camilleri. “The RAISE Act puts critically needed guardrails on AI, creating standards for employers that choose to use AI, and prohibits the use of AI to set wages — and Michiganders can’t wait for these protections any longer. It’s time to put workers first and pass the RAISE Act.”

The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
