Michigan AFL-CIO Statement on Senator Gary Peters’ Decision Not to Seek Reelection in 2026
LANSING, MI — Today, the Michigan AFL-CIO released the following statement from President Ron Bieber in response to Senator Gary Peters’ announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2026:
“Senator Gary Peters has been a steadfast advocate for Michigan’s working families and a true champion for unions. From his early days in public service to his pivotal role in the United States Senate, Senator Peters has always stood shoulder to shoulder with workers, fighting for better wages, safer workplaces, and stronger protections for the right to organize. His dedication to ensuring a level playing field for workers will leave a lasting impact on Michigan’s labor movement.”
Throughout his Senate tenure, Senator Peters has consistently supported legislation aimed at strengthening unions and protecting workers’ rights. He proudly voted for the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which would expand workers’ ability to unionize and negotiate for fair pay and benefits. Peters also supported critical COVID-19 relief packages that provided financial assistance to struggling families and frontline workers, as well as investments in infrastructure and manufacturing to create good-paying union jobs across Michigan.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
