LANSING, Mich. — Today, the Michigan AFL-CIO released the following statement from President Ron Bieber on the Michigan Court of Claims case that will decide whether Speaker Hall has to follow the Constitution, or if he can continue to play king.
“We call for the Michigan Court of Claims to enforce the Constitution, as Speaker Hall can’t be trusted to follow it himself,” said Ron BIEBER, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “The Constitution is clear: all bills passed by the legislature must be sent to the Governor. There is no room to play fast and loose with the Constitution amid so much manufactured chaos at the national level. We will continue to fight for working families by heeding the Constitution, and we urge the Court to do the same.”
Despite claiming to care about the Constitution, Republican Speaker Matt Hall has continued to play king, holding nine pro-worker bills that have already passed the legislature hostage. In response, multiple labor groups joined a lawsuit compelling Speaker Hall to send the bills to Governor Whitmer.
The lawsuit, filed by Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and supported by labor groups, including AFSCME Michigan, AFT Michigan, MEA, MNA, UAW, and SEIU Michigan, seeks to compel Speaker Hall to present House Bills 4177, 4665–4667, 4900–4901, 5817–5818, and 6058, which passed both chambers. These bills provide essential protections for hundreds of thousands of workers’ wages, pensions, and legal rights – impacting nearly one million Michiganders.
