LANSING, MI – State Senator Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte) received a 0% score, his third consecutive failing score, in a new legislative scorecard released today by the Michigan AFL-CIO. The state federation analyzed the voting records of all state senators on 7 key votes during the 2019-20 and 2021-22 legislative sessions. A copy of the full scorecard is available online.
“Once again, Tom Barrett has provided irrefutable proof that he does not stand with Michigan’s working families. His three failing grades over his three terms as a legislator show that he has voted against the interests of working people time and again,” said Ron BIEBER, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “Now that Barrett is running for Congress, his record clearly proves he’ll maintain a voting record of fighting for the wealthy and well-connected and is simply not the right choice for working families across Michigan’s 7th Congressional district.”
Barrett voted against the interests of Michigan’s working families on key issues, such as his vote on HB 4434, which would have put an end to federal unemployment benefits for Michigan residents, undermining the ability of families to meet their basic needs during the pandemic. Barrett also voted for SB 858, which would have curbed the ability of the Governor to respond to emergencies, including hindering the ability to extend protections to working families.
“Since joining the Michigan legislature in 2015, Tom Barrett has received a 0% score for his first term, a 13% score for his second, and another 0% score for his time in the state senate,” said Glenn FREEMAN, President of the Greater Lansing Central Labor Council. “Barrett has failed working people in the Michigan legislature, and that will not change if he is elected to Congress.”
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation of forty different labor organizations, eighteen local labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
