LANSING, MI – In a new legislative scorecard released last week, the Michigan AFL-CIO found that 14 Michigan House Republicans voted against the interests of Michigan’s working families every single time. The state federation analyzed the voting records of all state representatives on 6 key votes during the 2021-22 legislative sessions. A copy of the full scorecard is available online.
“A 0% score on the Michigan AFL-CIO Labor Scorecard is a badge of shame no legislator should strive for. Once again, we see that some of our elected officials do not have the interests of working people in mind when casting critical votes on legislation that impacts the lives of millions,” said Ron BIEBER, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “These legislators have shown they do not stand with Michigan’s working families, and union members will do well to remember that when casting their votes in November.”
All 14 House Republicans listed voted against the interests of Michigan’s working families on key bills, such as HB 4293, which would allow school districts to use non-certified staff as substitute teachers and prohibits this decision from being a subject of collective bargaining. Each representative also voted for HB 4501, which would have required MiOSHA to reimburse businesses for fines received for certain COVID violations, giving employers a free pass when they put a worker’s health and safety at risk.Â
“Michigan’s working people need elected officials that will defend our union freedoms, and the Michigan House Republicans listed have utterly failed working families this legislative cycle,” continued BIEBER. “Repeatedly voting against the interests of working families proves we cannot trust these legislators to vote on behalf of those that elected them in the first place.”Â
