Boy Scouts, Michigan AFL-CIO Present Sean Egan, other labor leaders, with Prestigious George Meany Award
DETROIT – Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Deputy Director for Labor Sean EGAN has received this year’s George Meany Award from the Michigan AFL-CIO and the Michigan Crossroads Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The award, presented to Egan at an annual dinner last week at IBEW Local 58, is given to union members who have made a significant contribution to the labor movement and the youth of their communities by volunteering in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America.
“It’s an incredible honor to have been selected by the Michigan AFL-CIO to receive this award,” said EGAN. “Having served as a journeyman electrician, shop steward, and local President, I know firsthand the power unions have to shape thriving careers and change lives. Giving back to our youth, fostering the next generation of community, union, and Scout leaders, is what this award is all about, and a mission I strive to live by every day.”

The George Meany Award was established by the Boy Scouts of America and the National AFL-CIO in 1974 and recognizes outstanding union members for their service to their communities’ young people. Individuals are nominated by their Central Labor Council and must exemplify the values of the Boy Scouts by upholding the Scout Oath and Scout Law in their communities, workplaces, and personal lives. Since its inception, only 2,500 union members have received this prestigious honor.
“Fighting for the future of our young people is why we do this work,” said Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron BIEBER. “The Michigan labor movement and the Scouts have long shared the mission to invest in the future of our communities’ young people and instill in them the values of community service, brotherhood, and social justice. The work Sean has done throughout his career to grow the labor movement and give back to his community is truly inspiring.”

“The Scouts are incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with Michigan’s unions,” said Janssen LEMLEY, Director of Development for the Boy Scouts of America, Michigan Crossroads Council. “This year’s awardees truly embody the values we teach through Scouting and are, through their daily efforts, helping to forge an ever-stronger bond between the Scouts and the labor movement.”
Other awardees honored last week include Michigan AFL-CIO Chief of Staff Derek Dobies, Michigan Nurses Foundation Chair Becky Baldwin, UAW member and four-decade Ford Motor Company steel plant worker John Teran, and Detroit Disability Power Advocacy Director Eric Welsby.
