Pride

Month

2020

Pride Month Initiative

Just last year, activists and allies from around the country converged on upstate New York to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Those events were among the largest gatherings and celebrations seen in quite some time.  As we are mired in the calamity of COVID-19, it is a striking reminder to think back to only one year ago, and just how different things were. While battling this COVID-19 outbreak, we hearken back to our strength in past times of  crisis and uncertainty. We believe in the dignity of all work, just as ardently as we respect and uphold the dignity of all workers!

How someone identifies their gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, etc., should not affect their working conditions or protections. In continuation of this ethos and in support of our Pride@Work AFL-CIO Constituency Group, we are working with local officials to make sure communities respect the work, commitment, and sacrifice of all workers, regardless of personal feelings. We need to lift up the communities and leaders that are doing the right things for workers on a regular basis. As we move into the most uncertain summer in recent history, it is imperative that we build and expand our coalition while truly standing alongside all workers.

Now that June is here, we want to broaden support and get as many resolutions/proclamations passed in municipalities across our state. We are relying on you to further this effort in one of two ways:

1. Work with a local council body to pass a resolution designating June 2020 as “Pride Month” in their community.
2. Work with your local elected officials to pass a proclamation designating June 2020 as “Pride Month” in your community.
Please send PDF and/or photo(s) of signed resolutions/proclamations to: mdavis@miaflcio.org.

Now more than ever, we need our communities and allies to be even stronger advocates for each other. 2019 marked a fifty-year culmination of the fights for respect and legislative protections that many have lost their lives to pursue and defend. Let’s make June 2020 the kickoff point for our historic consolidation of voices and expansion of power for workers of all backgrounds.
