LANSING, MI – Today the Michigan AFL-CIO announced its endorsements for Michigan’s statewide offices ahead of the August primary elections. The formal endorsements of Gretchen Whitmer for Governor, Garlin Gilchrist for Lieutenant Governor, Dana Nessel for Attorney General, and Jocelyn Benson for Secretary of State were approved by a majority vote of the General Board and Executive Council of the Michigan AFL-CIO.
“Michigan’s working families need elected officials that will show up for them and fight for their rights in the workplace, and the Michigan AFL-CIO is proud to announce our endorsements for Gretchen, Garlin, Dana and Jocelyn in their re-election campaigns,” said Ron BIEBER, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “Michigan’s labor movement shows up for the elected officials that have had our back, and this election cycle won’t be any different. We’re ready to start knocking on doors, make phone calls, send texts, and get out the vote to ensure a successful election night for our endorsed candidates.”
Under the leadership of Whitmer, Gilchrist, Nessel and Benson we have seen historic investments in Michigan’s working families. In just the last three years over 82,000 workers have replaced over 13,000 miles of roads and made improvements on over 900 bridges and our state’s infrastructure. The creation of the Payroll Fraud Enforcement Unit and Payroll Fraud Hotline have protected paychecks for countless workers and their families and strengthened penalties for payroll fraud, making Michigan a leader in protecting workers. We’ve also seen some of the safest and most secure elections in our lifetime, giving voting union members the full faith that their vote will be counted and reported accurately.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
