Michigan AFL-CIO Endorses Ilitch, Gaffney In University Board Races
LANSING, Mich. – Today, the Michigan AFL-CIO announced its endorsement of Denise llitch for the University of Michigan Board of Regents and Mark Gaffney for the Wayne State University Board of Governors.
“Denise Ilitch and Mark Gaffney have been crucial allies of labor on campus,” said Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron BIEBER. “Our universities are powered by thousands of hardworking people and they deserve leaders like Denise and Mark fighting in their corner. Reelecting pro-labor candidates to our university governing boards is an essential step to ensuring our universities protect the rights and dignity of their workers.”
“I am honored to receive this endorsement, as I’ve worked tirelessly in solidarity with Michigan AFL–CIO unions to represent the interests of working men and women,” said ILITCH. “I will continue to be a partner in supporting the work we all do to make Michigan a place with quality, accessible, affordable, education for all.”
Ilitch was first elected to the University of Michigan Board of Regents in 2008. As a regent, Ilitch has fought to control tuition costs and helped to pass policies that are enabling thousands of U of M employees to benefit from a union contract for the first time.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of the workers of the Michigan AFL-CIO Unions,” said GAFFNEY. “They represent all Michigan workers and retirees and their choice of candidates is important. Their political power is well known and thus their support is meaningful. I promise to make these workers proud as a candidate and hopefully for 8 more years as a member of the WSU Board of Governors.”
Gaffney has served on the Wayne State University Board of Governors since 2016. A retired Teamster and former member of the National Maritime Union, Seafarers Union, and United Steelworkers, Gaffney has spent his career devoted to the labor movement. He also served as President of the Michigan AFL-CIO for 12 years.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
