Michigan AFL-CIO Applauds Whitmer for Focusing on Workers During State of the State Address
LANSING, Mich. – Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her sixth State of the State address this evening from the Capitol. Her remarks focused heavily on workers and underscored the pro-worker policies enacted last year that will strengthen wages, lower taxes for working people and retirees, and restore Michigan workers’ collective bargaining rights. In response, Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron BIEBER issued the following statement:
“Working people were front and center tonight as the Governor celebrated the progress we’ve made towards making Michigan a workers’ rights state. Last year, the Whitmer administration and our pro-worker majorities in the Capitol passed history-making policies that will strengthen collective bargaining rights, make our tax system work for working people, and open up paths to the middle class through good-paying union jobs. 2023 was the year of labor, with workers from the auto industry to Hollywood winning record contracts because of the strength and solidarity of their unions. The year ahead looks even brighter as our leaders in Lansing renew their commitment to delivering the pro-worker agenda they promised.”
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
