LANSING, MI – Today, the Michigan AFL-CIO proudly celebrates Labor Day — a time to honor the strength and power of unions. President Ron Bieber joined labor unions from across the state in Detroit’s annual Labor Day march and rally, standing shoulder to shoulder with working people to celebrate their contributions and reaffirm our commitment to workers’ rights.
“This Labor Day and every day, unions are fighting for every working American and their family to have the freedom and fairness of a living wage and economic security in the richest nation on Earth,” said Ron BIEBER, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “I hope you’ll join me this Labor Day in my gratitude and support for the paramount work of the labor movement.”
“This Labor Day finds the working people of this country in the fight for our lives. It finds us standing together — united to fight fascism, to confront corporate greed, and to protect each other,” said Jason ANDERSON, national vice president of the American Federation of Government Employees. “A hundred Labor Days from now, our children’s children and their children will look back on this moment and remember that the Labor Movement did not back down. They will remember that we rose up, fought back, and preserved democracy and dignity for generations to come.”
“Every American worker, whether they belong to a union or not, benefits from the work of unions,” said Terrence MARTIN, president of AFT Michigan. “We have unions to thank for the 8-hour workday, weekends, Social Security and much more. On Labor Day, we must reflect on these victories and reaffirm our dedication to the fight ahead.”
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
