LANSING, MI – Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber offered the following statement in response to the Michigan state House’s bipartisan passage of the Lowering MI Costs plan, which expands the Working Families Tax Credit and repeals the Retirement Tax:
“Yesterday’s bipartisan vote is a victory for Michigan’s retirees and working people,” said Ron BIEBER, President of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “By repealing the Snyder/Calley-era retirement tax and expanding the Working Families Tax Credit, hundreds of thousands of Michiganders will keep more of their hard-earned dollars. These policies will help Michiganders struggling to make ends meet in the face of rising costs and stagnant wages. We look forward to the Michigan Senate passing the Lowering MI Costs plan and sending it to the Governor’s desk.”
The Lowering MI Costs plan will deliver the largest tax break to Michiganders in decades and ensure that all taxpayers see relief. The Lowering MI Cost plan will repeal the retirement tax to save 500,000 households an average of $1,000 a year, increase the Working Families Tax Credit to put an average of $3,150 back into the pockets of 700,000 Michiganders, and deliver inflation relief checks to all Michigan taxpayers.
The Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan’s largest labor organization, is a federation representing forty different labor organizations, eighteen different central labor councils, and eight constituency groups representing over 1 million union members and their families.
