Michigan Unions Support Paid Sick Leave Legislation

LANSING – The Michigan AFL-CIO issued the following statement today supporting new legislation introduced by Sen. Jim Ananich (D-Flint), Rep. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), and Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) to allow full- and part-time workers to earn paid sick leave:

“Everyone knows family comes first,” said Ron Bieber, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “That’s why this legislation is so important, because powerful corporations have used their influence to cut benefits so working people can’t even meet the basics to sustain their families. This legislation puts working people first by ensuring that no one who works for a living has to choose between their job and taking time off from work due to an illness or a family emergency. I want to thank Senator Ananich and Representatives Chang and Geiss for their leadership. Now it’s time for Governor Snyder and Republicans in the legislature to get onboard and support this important pro-family legislation.”

Michigan AFL-CIO Statement on Failed GOP Tax Proposal

LANSING – Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber issued the following statement today on House Bill 4001, which was defeated on the floor of the Michigan House early this morning. The Republican tax proposal included a massive tax break for millionaires and billionaires, and would have forced drastic cuts to education, roads, and public safety.

“Defeating this bill is a big win for working people. This legislation was bad news for our families, students, and roads. Republicans need to get their priorities straight. Instead of rigging the rules to give even more tax breaks to their corporate campaign donors, they need to start working with Democrats to raise the incomes of working men and women, and build an economy that works for everyone.”

Michigan AFL-CIO Statement on Withdrawal of Trump’s Labor Nominee

LANSING – Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber issued the following statement today commenting on news reports that Andy Puzder is expected to withdraw his nomination as Donald Trump’s Secretary of Labor:

“This is a big win for American workers, who mobilized across the country to defeat Andy Puzder’s confirmation. Puzder was a true enemy to working people, who spent his entire career as a corporate CEO working to deny his own employees fair pay, decent benefits, and a secure retirement. He had no business serving as Secretary of Labor.

“Puzder’s withdrawal should serve as a wake-up call to Donald Trump. He promised to base every decision on what’s best for America’s working families, but since taking office, he’s made it crystal clear that he’s not on our side.

“The president must now choose a new labor nominee who will protect and defend the rights of America’s workers, and hold big corporations accountable when they cut corners, cheat workers, and violate our nation’s labor laws.”

Michigan Unions Support Democratic Plan to Fix State Unemployment Agency

LANSING – Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Bieber issued the following statement today supporting new legislation announced by House and Senate Democrats to fix the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency:

“Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency is broken, and it’s time to fix it. Governor Snyder and Lansing Republicans manipulated the state’s unemployment laws to favor their corporate campaign donors, and working people have been taking it on the chin ever since. It’s time to make this right, and start treating jobless workers with the dignity and respect they deserve.

“This legislation offers real solutions to repair the damage done to people’s lives by fully reimbursing those who were falsely accused of fraud, by reducing the outrageous penalties, by helping victims repair their credit, and by cracking down on corporations that refuse to pay their unemployment taxes. Most importantly, this package will help working families by restoring the six weeks of benefits that were cut by Lansing Republicans, and by increasing the maximum weekly benefits.

“The legislature needs to get this done, pronto. No more excuses. No more delays. Republicans need to clean up the mess they created, get their priorities straight, and start working to make Michigan’s economy work for everyone, not just the wealthy and big corporations.”
