Fellowships with the Michigan AFL-CIO

The Michigan AFL-CIO Fellowship Program offers college students a chance to gain real-world job experience working on exciting, fast-paced campaigns to hold our elected officials accountable. We offer three types of fellowships:

  • LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY: The Legislative Intern will report directly to the Director of Government Affairs. This person will help monitor the Michigan Legislature, attend committee hearings, track and analyze legislation, and help prepare a multitude of documents and materials for weekly meetings with affiliated unions.
  • POLITICAL ORGANIZING: As a Political Organizing Fellow you will have the opportunity to work alongside the Political Director on strategy and implementation of electoral program. You’ll gain hands-on experience analyzing election results, researching turnout rates and candidate performance, and using membership demographics to best manage program tactics and resources in municipal elections all the way up to federal and statewide races.
  • POLITICAL COMMUNICATIONS: Communications Intern would be responsible for monitoring news reports and social media for issues of concern to the Michigan AFL-CIO. This person would also assist in preparing press releases, media advisories, social media posts, letter writing and other external and internal communications.
